Our History: BerrieHill Research Division of ARA

It began as two men and an office.  In 2005, Jeff Berrie and Ron Hill launched BerrieHill Research Corporation in the Dayton, Ohio, area to offer troubleshooting of sensor technology and perform RF material measurements for aerospace and military applications.

The company’s first contract came from ATK-Mission Research, now known as Orbital ATK. BerrieHill worked on an RF material project, measuring material electromagnetic properties and radio frequency characteristics.

Not long after, BerrieHill won a Department of Defense Small Business Innovative Research contract for the development of an aircraft damage locator, an electro-optics system that would characterize surface damage on the hull of an airplane.

The company earned its first large-scale, long-term contract in 2009. That 7-year contract encompassed 14 different projects for the Sensors Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. BerrieHill’s work helped boost the capabilities of sensors on Air Force aircraft, improving intelligence-gathering capabilities, and providing analysis for data collected.

Hill left the company in 2010 to pursue other interests, but BerrieHill continued to grow.  The company established its first major laboratory that year, a 4,000-sq.-ft. facility on Senate Drive that it has since expanded to 8,000-sq.-ft.

It also added facilities in Boulder, Colo., in 2011, and moved to an 8,500-sq.-ft. headquarters facility on Paragon Rd. in Dayton in 2013.  In 2014, BerrieHill added a 2,000 sq.-ft. Columbus office in the same building as The Ohio State University ElectroScience Laboratory to facilitate research collaboration with OSU staff and students.

Acquired by ARA in 2017, the company is recognized nationally as an expert in research, modeling, measurement and design services for a variety of applications, including computational electromagnetics, antennas and radomes, RF materials, sensor data acquisition and processing, RF hardware and software programming and operation and management of advanced laboratory facilities

The company has collaborated with the most significant companies in the aerospace and defense industries and other related contractors, including:  Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Electric, Wyle Laboratories, MacAulay-Brown Inc., Battelle Memorial Institute and more (see full list).

Our work has assisted the missions of numerous U.S. government agencies, including the Air Force, Army, Navy, NASA, the National Security Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, the Transportation Security Administration, and more.
